Jurassic Park Was A Good Book.

i'm back! for now. i have a lot to do, and it's just really overwhelming. i apologize, but i was really discouraged with the turnout on the lennon post. i know i should have stuck to my guns, but alas, i didn't. i'm hoping people still come here and check up on my little blog, if not, then, welcome back! :D i have for you today, err tonight, 2 things, one album & one mixtape. let's hit the mixtape!

1.Havana Affair [cover] - Red Hot Chili Peppers
this is the only cover on the We're A Happy Family tribute CD i liked, all the others were shit, well, the Offspring cover was good, so all the others excluding those two. haha.

2.Wild Side - Mötley Crüe
i've been on a crüe fix for awhile lately, my taste changes a lot. i love 'em though. they speak to me. yes they do.

3.How Long Is Forever - Willie Nelson
willie's reggae album is awesome. i fell in love with it when it first came out, agggh. :D

4.Muse 2 The Pharaoh - Prince
off of the album that a lot of people don't like, this track is one of the best off of The Rainbow Children, i'd have to say it's a smooth track to relax to.

5.Zealots - the Fugees
says it all. right josh?

6.Night Nurse [peel] - Gregory Issacs
reggae and me have been real good friends these days. i love my bad grammar.

7.Hate & War - the Clash
RALPHIE ROCKS is his name. he is dope, we jam to the clash.

8.Me Gustas Tu - Manu Chao
i know i have one of his albums, but eh, this is a good track. :P

9.7-11 - the Ramones
a tragic tale of falling in love with someone that you met at a 7-11 only to have them squished by a truck.

10.Blue Velvet - Bobby Vinton
think of the movie. 'BABY WANTS BLUE VELVET'

11.Gold Watch - Lupe Fiasco
one of my favorite tracks off of The C O O L. shhh.

12.Jamming - Bob Marley
black love is my favorite incense. spark it up when i want to sleep.

13.Midnight Rockers - Bedouin Soundclash
these cats keep it real with their style of canadian roots rock.

14.Deck The Halls/Bring A Torch - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
got to have ONE christmas song, this is it. :]

15.Casa Nueva - the Cosmic Key
a local group, this is actually a side project of a death metal band from my town, check them out, (the side project), myspace.com/desertjazz. give 'em a listen. for me?

16.Crowds - Bauhaus
i love it. i feel it. i am it.

17.Great Romances of The 20th Century - Taking Back Sunday
my friends & i sang along to their entire first album, it was raining, one of the best days of my life.

18.Me & You - Brenton Wood
killer oldies. art laboe, thank you for this man.

19.Natural High - Bloodstone
jackie brown! haha.

Underwater Cinematographer

Talib Kweli carries the remnants of Hip Hop's integrity in the pockets of his words. This song is why.

Talib Kweli
Young, Fresh & Clean
Get Familiar Mixtape

Is Thursday underrated, misunderstood, or just plain shitty? I here much of the latter two being shouted at me from blogs, friends, and music critics alike. I wholeheartedly disagree with them, because I honestly hear genius embedded in every song. For my sake, let me know if I'm simple, or just insane. Hear them Do it Acoustic.
Thursday
Signals Over the Air (Live Acoustic)
Live Acoustic from the Apple Store

But I haven't given up on Hip Hop. Not by a long shot. Which is why I love to kick back and hear MF Doom spit it wicked. Its just plain fun to listen to his simple flow delivered so smoothly and effectively. Check it.
MF Doom
Fancy Clown (Alt. Take)
Ghostface Meets MF Doom: Operation Ironman

Catchy. Repetitive. Brilliant. "Q & Not U" can't do it any other way. Case and Point, this song.
Q & Not U

Local acts in my Town are never really taken seriously. But when you make music that gets the kids dancing and learning all the words to your songs, then you're likely to break the mold. Love and Respect.

In Your Dreams

This Kanye West B-side sounds like it was beta version of the arms race remix beat. But the story is melancholy and endearing. Another Golden Track from our Favorite Bear Fetishist.

Kanye West
Roses
Late Registration Mixtape

A slow, tape-warm, Conga-fueled version of my favorite Sublime song was definitely a welcome surprise to my earbuds. However, Brad's singing sounds influenced by something distinctly '80s, but I don't know what.
Sublime
Ebin (Alt. Take)
Sinsemilla

Beginning a song with gibberish that crashes into the best beat scrapped from Food & Liquor was enough to make me forgive the fiasco Mr. Fiasco created for himself. If you, too, are still chapped about Lupe's ignorance towards ATCQ, I ask now to be forgiving and enjoy the music.
Lupe Fiasco
Slow Down
Food & Liquor (Advance)

I have no idea when I got this song, or why I did, but I'm infinitely grateful that my iPod blessed my ears with such greatness once more. I nearly forgot about this song altogether, until I fell into a journey with the galloping guitar and weeping violin, soaring through windscapes and wonderwalls, towards a climatic battle to breach the brazen drum beat that lolled me home once more. The Magic Numbers are nothing short of Magic.
The Magic Numbers
This Love
The Magic Numbers

My only qualm with this song is that its the clean version. But other than that, this is my favorite remix of "Distortion to Static", considering there are upwards of 20 of them. A simple drum beat that proves again that the drum is the loudest acoustic instrument shadowed by a creepy melody that fades in and out to highlight Black Thought's lyrical tyranny. A True Gem.

Madvillainy
(MassMirror)

Stylus Magazine
While the comic exterior to the album belies the intensity of the material, there is little mistaking that Madlib and Doom have created an album that is as raw and invigorating as any in Hip-Hop.
All Music Guide
Madvillainy gets close to the genius seen on Quasimoto's Unseen, and like that record this one might take a few listens to find it. But once it clicks in, this disc stays in the CD player for days.
Dusted Reviews
While every Ivy League dog kennel worker with a paycheck from Blender or Revolver may write dissertations about how Outkast re-invented pop music (and if we follow that logic) then Madvilian simply destroys the boundaries.
Prefix Magazine
In the never-ending search for "realness" in hip-hop music, Madvillainy effortlessly makes new hip-hop without feeling the need to talk about authenticity.
PopMatters
Madvillainy is a jewel-encrusted treasure of an album. It's only 45 minutes long but there's more than enough here to please the most jaded audiophile.
TinyMixtapes.com
Madvillainy is a dizzying synergy of heavy brains and chemistry, culminating in blissfully fun, irreverent, and engaging brand of record-making magic.

Rage Against The Machine
The Battle of Los Angeles
(MassMirror)

All Music Guide
Recorded in less than a month, The Battle of Los Angeles is the most focused album of the band's career, exploding from the gate and rarely letting go the whole way through.
Rolling Stone
With The Battle of Los Angeles, they've managed to win a war within -- one in which the band's notoriously feuding members have come together to produce a sound that's not quite louder than a bomb but that's definitely as loud as Led Zeppelin II.
Entertainment Weekly
Where most acts just crib the materialism and misogynistic swagger of the gangstas, the mixed-race Rage find meaning in the righteous warrior stance of Public Enemy and newcomers like Black Star.
CMJ (1/10/00, p.3) - Ranked #5 in CMJ's "Top 30 Editorial Picks [for 1999]."
CMJ (11/1/99, p.3) - "...displays [Tom Morello's] virtuosic guitar talents, stomping on effects pedals and churning out resonant, body-slamming riffs that will leave you shuddering....Anger is a gift, and RATM effectively shapes the emotion into compact, blustery songs..."
Vibe (12/99, p.248) - "...a faster cleaner, and far more diverse than anything [they] ever recorded....Rage's music moves confidently forward....BATTLE won't disappoint..."
NME (11/6/99, p.46) - 7 out of 10 - "...This record rocks...another album of ranting, churning, slamming heavy funk-metal....Wicked!....Keep raging, mad Yank commies, your planet needs you."
Urban Latino (1/00, p.82) - 3 out of 4 - "...another justice driven steamroller....their conscientious use of talent and wrath for the forces of good is surely applaudable..."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "[T]his was arguably their finest hour. Tight, focused, relentlessly heavy..."

now onto personal junk. so, as i said in that one mixtape post, i am ga ga over my 'apollonia'. i can't say her name, but she's nice, she has me going to church now, no we're not going out, but i dunno, something about her, she's great to be around, really funny, & something about her just makes me excited to talk to her & see her. i get to see her every tuesday & sunday. i'm happy about that. she keeps me sane while everything everywhere else is eating me alive. my mother was incarcerated recently (hence the dear mama video) i can't disclose why, but i miss her dearly. it's hard to get through knowing she's not around, but thanks to my 'Apollonia', i'm ok. :D school couldn't be better. i'm still extremely credit deficient but it's going good so far. :] well thanks for reading if you did. i'm waiting for 'Apollonia' to call. bye. link in comments.

Tonight.

i will have a Prince mixtape for you tonight.
and two other albums, i haven't decided which ones, but they will be personal favorites.
i'm not feeling too well.
but i will provide the music. we still get hits daily.
that makes me happy. :)
i will update on my life & other junk when i post the mixtape & 2 albums.
stay tuned.

How you said you understood me.

It's funny,
How I believed it soo fast.

It's soo funny,
How you said you loved me.

It's funny,
How I thought this feeling could last.

It's soo funny
How well I treated you.

It's funny,
How i'll never be able to take it back.

It's soo funny,
How you just don't care anymore.

It's funny,
How i'll always still come back.

It's funny to hear you say what you do.
I'm a sucker for your words and i'll always think they're true.

Feeling like I can have my cake, and I can eat it too
Eating it whole just to find out it'll leave me sick too.

It's kind of funny and it kind of is not.

It felt kind of like heaven but it kind of got hot.

Like having that long phone conversation
but both phones decided to die.

Taking that long ride home,
Just to find out you took a wrong turn
miles and miles, hours and hours ago.

It's kind of funny and it kind of is not

It's kind of funny but it's kind of a shock.

Deltron 3030
(MassMirror)

All Music Guide
A wildly imaginative, unabashedly geeky concept album about interplanetary rap warriors battling to restore humanity's hip-hop supremacy in a corporate-dominated dystopia (or something like that).
Amazon.CO.UK
Over its 21 tracks, Deltron 3030 erases the errors of this rap era in favor of hip-hop's future fathers.
PitchFork
Though never self-satisfied or deliberately obscure, the record is an infinite improvement over the wanky verbal gymnastics that currently crowd smug, jerk-off rappers' 12-inches. Though Del may have helped start that trend, here he aches to say something significant.
PopMatters Music Review
While Nakamura's soundscape would be impressive enough on its own, Del adds a smooth, sci-fi vocal which provides a stinging social commentary on American inequality through the guise of a societal critique 1029 years from now.

Licensed to Ill
(MassMirror)

All Music Guide
There is a sense of genuine discovery, of creating new music, that remains years later, after countless plays, countless misinterpretations, countless rip-off acts, even countless apologies from the Beasties, who seemed guilty by how intoxicating the sound of it is, how it makes beer-soaked hedonism sound like the apogee of human experience. And maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but in either case, Licensed to Ill reigns tall among the greatest records of its time.
Rolling Stone
"Licensed to Ill" cuts an even wider swath musically than Run DMC's "Raising Hell", and it's the brash assurance of Rubin's "stealin" that ultimately makes these white boys more than a sophomoric joke.

Divshare

Divshare is a file sharing website.
I've been using it here.
But It's been offline all day and in the past weeks has shown to be unreliable.
However, I will be updating all my posts with links that do work.
Sorry for the inconvience.

UPDATE (09/08/07):
Seems Divshare has been updating servers and the like,
which is why we have been seeing all this downtime.
They wrote about it in their latest blog update.

Imitation Best Form of Flattery.

i realize this image has nothing to do with cover songs.
deal.
i've got a new mixtape for you! and if you haven't figured it out, it's chock full of cover songs.
my favorites to be exact.
let's go through it like we always dooooo.
1.Since I Don't Have You - Guns 'N Roses
original artist: the Skyliners
off of their badly recieved 'Spaghetti Incident', this would have to be one of my favorite Roses cover, rather than Heaven's Door or Live & Let Die.
2.The Diamond Sea - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
original artist: Sonic Youth
Karen O's take on Thurston Moore's vocals captured my heart, i feel that this one is better.
3.Baby I'm Yours - Arctic Monkeys
original artist: Barbara Lewis
although i prefer the original, the Monkeys pull it off well, i'm glad they kept the backup vocals.
4.Under The Bridge - Gym Class Heroes
original artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Mr.McCoy's version of this rocked me, it signaled that they were coming back as good as they were on the Papercuts album, but sadly, i was wrong. very wrong. :[
5.Love Will Tear Us Apart - Fall Out Boy
original artist: Joy Division
i like this cover, i'm not really a big fan of FoB but this cover is rockin', the vocalist, stump is it? well, whatever, he brings it on this one.
6.Paranoid - the Dickies
original artist: Black Sabbath
a sped up version of this heavy metal standard, not better than the original, but just as good.
7.All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
original artist: Bob Dylan
you knew this was going to be here. :D
8.Freddie's Dead - Fishbone
original artist: Curtis Mayfield
not better than the original, but fun to listen to a ska take on this, although, i THINK this was during their heavier period rather than their traditional skarastafunk.
9.Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash
original artist: Depeche Mode
i like both the original & cover equally, johnny's version feels more personal & powerful while the original has that digital hate feel, if there's such a feeling..
10.Como La Flor - Los Abandoned
original artist: Selena
no one can top Selena, if you say that to ANY mexican, you will be beaten, so don't say it, or i'll beat you, you can say this is a good cover though. haha.
11.Do You Wanna Dance? - the Ramones
original artist: Bobby Freeman
although the Beach Boys changed the title from 'Do You Want To Dance' to what it is here, it's still pretty much the same song, all i have to say, hah.
12.Up From The Skies - Demented Are Go!
original artist: Jimi Hendrix
a rare change of pace for DAG, i really enjoyed this song, it surprised the hell out of me when i first heard it, it's pretty much the same song, aside from Sparky's vocals and the maybe the pace..
13.And I Love Her - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
original artist: the Beatles
one of the only Beatle covers i can stand, there are very few, very, very few.
14.Sea of Love - Cat Power
original artist: Phil Phillips
i prefer Charlyn's version over Mr.Phillips, the reason being, hers feels more emotional to me, like i believe her, and Mr.Phillips is just a plain ol' doo wop guy, don't get me wrong, it's a damn fine track, no matta what.
15.Wonderwall - Radiohead
original artist: Oasis
Radiohead > Oasis. 'nuff said.
16.Angel Baby - John Lennon
original artist: Rosie & the Originals
i like John's version, but Rosie's tops it.
17.Lola - Bad Manners
original artist: the Kinks
a nice ska take on this classic track, tell me what you think.
18.Amor Divino - Cafe Tacuba
original artist: Leo Dan
Leo Dan's version is the first i heard, i loved it, i love Leo Dan, but Cafe's take on it rocks it, i love it.
19.Bohemian Rhapsody - the Flaming Lips
original artist: Queen
an interesting take on Queen's classic stadium rocker, it doesn't smear their name, it adds a bit of color, ha.
20.Da Shit You Can't Fuck Wit - Kittie
original artist: Da Brat
don't ask.

Ready to Die
(MassMirror)

Rolling Stone
With his prodigious, often booming voice overwhelming the track, he sweeps his verbal camera high and low, painting a sonic picture so vibrant that you're transported right to the scene. He raps in clear, sparse terms, allowing the lyrics to hit the first time you hear them.
Q (12/94, p.153)
...the natural rapping, clever use of sound effects and acted dialogue, and concept element (from a baby being born at the start to the fading heartbeat at the end) set this well apart from the average gangsta bragging...
Uncut (p.128)
A funky, hard-nosed chronicle of a death foretold.
Vibe (6/02, p.109)
...Fans knew that from this debut that Biggie was indeed a born winner...
The Source (10/94, p.79)
...READY TO DIE, the debut from Brooklyn's own Biggie Smalls echoes the attitude in full Ghettovision color, showing us that the true `American way' is to hustle for yours...
